Increase adopted

A rate increase of 5.5 per cent has been adopted by Cardinia Shire Council for 2015-2016.

The budget approved last week provides for a $30 million investment in new community and recreation facilities, roads and footpaths and other capital works.

Mayor Cr Leticia Wilmot major sporting and community projects to be funded during the year included Officer Secondary College stadium and community hub ($2.2 million), further development of the regional soccer facility at Pakenham recreation reserve ($1.4 million), Lang Lang sports facilities ($1.3 million) and Heatherbrae recreation reserve at Officer ($1 million).

At Emerald $1.5 million will be invested in a new community hub and $1.1 million will be spent on netball facilities.

Cr Wilmot said the 5.5 per cent rate increase continued the downward trend set out in the four-year financial plan.

Last year’s rate rise was 5.9 per cent.

Garbage collection fees for the year, set at $228.20, are $5 lower than last year and council has continued the $50 rate rebate for people receiving a Newstart Allowance.

Cr Wilmot said council had strived to deliver a sensible, balanced budget that met the diverse needs of the community.

“Council recognises times are tough and is working hard to cut costs wherever possible”.

We (council) are dedicated to providing the facilities and services residents want and need at the lowest possible cost, she said.

Cr Wilmot said public feedback on the draft budget and council plan had been valuable.

Written responses will be made to matters raised in nine submissions received.

Cr Wilmot also thanked those that attended public information sessions to hear aspects of the budget and financial plan explained.
