Protect heritage

Committee for Drouin members have appealed to Baw Baw Shire to establish a process in which heritage buildings can be developed, but with sympathy to the town’s history.

Judy Farmer and Rhona Hendrick addressed Baw Baw Shire’s special council meeting last week.

Mrs Farmer said heritage was a contentious issue but there should be a way that the façade of historic buildings could be maintained.

She referred to the old Drouin Motors building, which she said was part of Drouin’s identity.

“We are seeking a mechanism be put in place so that a red flag comes up when there is a proposed development so that it can be done in a sympathetic way. “Buildings are part of a town’s story,” she said. The Committee for Drouin said there needed to be a different way to approach development.

Mrs Farmer requested planning officers work with committee members to identify some of the significant sites for Drouin.
