Panthers win third match

By Laurie Williams Yarragon won its third match to jump to eighth place on the table after a gutsy 16-point win over Boolarra, 12.10 (82) to 7.14 (56).

Boolarra led the first quarter but let the opposition take over when the ends are reversed and trailed by three points at the mid break.

Yarragon’s coach Stuart Edwards showed plenty of determination and his four goals was a rock on which Yarragon built their win.

There was still only a handful of points the difference at three-quarter-time but Yarragon rose up higher and straighter to score more accurately to run out 16 point winners.

With the Panthers having one less scoring shot than Boolarra, it showed the Demons wasted ample opportunities to build up a decent score.

Yarragon’s best were Rob Wallace, Paul Harvey, Jake Cropley and Joel Kilday while for the Demons Chris Riseley, Matthew Windsor, Courtney Sherriff and Daryl Mayman all tried hard.

Jesse Giardina finished with three goals.

Bulldogs bite Bloods

Newborough had revenge for their first round loss with a resounding 22-point win over Trafalgar, 13.13 (91) to 11.3 (69). The win gave Newborough a stake in the top four. It was only Newborough’s 48th victory over Trafalgar in the 100 matches played between the two clubs.

Newborough should have wrapped up the match by half time but their inability to kick accurately saw some poor results from good attempts.

It was a picnic day for players of both sides as 18 players scored goals (10 Newborough and eight Trafalgar) but Newborough were all over the Bloods.

Youngster Anthony Rosato has been a find for Newborough. Coming from the junior ranks he played beyond his maturity matching it with much older opponents.

Trafalgar now face the prospect of missing out this season unless they can put a few wins together.

For Newborough it was Anthony Rosato who showed out with good support from Liam Charles, Andrew Philip and Stuart Robertson while for Trafalgar, Jace Butler, Jamie Hines, Darcy Long and Haydn Farrell collected the votes.

Blues give notice

Thorpdale gave notice they are to be a team to be watched as they set up a 30-point win over Morwell East, 10.10 (70) to 6.4 (40).

The Blues turned the tables on an opening round loss to the Hawks.

The Blues are sitting in fifth with an eye to a higher berth in eight weeks time.

Setting up with a 4.1 first quarter, the Blues established a better teamwork display and a more creditable forward line.

Once again Llan Osman was amongst the goals and he has proved the find of the year. His five goals has brought him to 42 so far only two behind Yinnar’s Tim Aitken.

By half time Thorpdale were well established and looked set to win by a substantial margin.

By three-quarter-time Thorpdale were in the box seat but given due to Morwell East they staged a revival in the final term to outscore Thorpdale in a goal for goal tussle.

Thorpdale’s best were Kris Bedford, Harley Foat, Kayde O’Connell and Luke Jenkinson while for the East Brandon Francis Frank Marks and Paul Henry played well.

Tigers win well

In a foregone conclusion Mirboo North inflicted another loss to Hill End, ensuring the Hillmen stay secured on the bottle of the table without a win.

After a competitive first half Hill End failed to show too much after half time as Mirboo North went into overdrive to secure a good win, 15.10 (100) to 6.7 (43).

Tim Trail got his magic boots on again driving home five goals but the rest were shared around with eight goalkickers,

Hill End had five goal kickers but all were single digits.

For Mirboo North, Clancy Bennett was in top form with Tim Traill, Donovan Webb and Damien Turner as best while for the Hillmen Richard Horton, John warren, Jared Martin and Lachlan Fanning were best.

Sensational draw

In sensational circumstances Yallourn-Yallourn North snatched a draw against Yinnar in a desperate finish.

When Yallourn-Yallourn North’s Tim Phillips scored a goal after the siren the scoreboard had it a one point win to the Bombers but when the umpires checked the final result it was a draw. Both teams were confused straight after the match. The Bombers had thought they had won while their worthy opponents Yinnar were devastated.

When the scoreboard was adjusted and showed a draw it was a mix of emotions by both camps as noone had won. It was only the third draw between the two clubs. The result was fitting to teams first and second on the ladder.

Yallourn-Yallourn North still head the ladder while Yinnar are second on percentage with Mirboo North third.
