Deer Association dinner

The Australian Deer Association celebrated its 39th annual dinner at Logan Park venue Danny’s.

A record of 140 guests attended. Guests included four ADA life members and partners, wildlife biologist and guest speaker Dr David Forsyth, Shooters and Fishers Party member for East Gippsland Jeff Bourman and Field and Game Australia chairman Bill Patterson.

ADA representatives included national president David Voss and partner, New South Wales secretary Doug Young, Game Council chairman and ADA NSW life member John Mumford and ADA Victoria chief executive Barry Howlett and partner from Warragul.

Many local, metropolitan and interstate members enjoyed a superb fourcourse meal prepared by specialist game chef Shane McRae conducted with due ritual and ceremony of ADA’s own Australian deer hunting traditions incorporated within.

It showed guests there was a lot more to the ADA than shooting deer.

Local identity John Byrant did a sterling job as master of ceremonies and there was a small display of hunting trophies in the background to provide a great atmosphere for the event.

Local ADA dinner committee members Neville Cliff, Tony Power, Andrew Seggie, George Martin, Matt Draisma and Wally Dergacz provided most of the game meats and were pleased with the result.

A toast to absent friends added a solemn moment.

Highlights of the dinner included David Forsyth’s presentation on predator interactions with deer and partial deer carcuses, data gleaned from his extensive fieldwork with wild deer using fixed motion sensor cameras.

Other highlights were the presentation of the Arthur Bentley trophy for the largest Sambar stag taken by and ADA member for 2014, the ceremonial piping in of the venison by local piper Don Whyte, followed by a toast to the deer, and the presentation of a number of Association awards for services to deer, their conservation, hunter education and related ethical deer hunting promotional activities to long term members Neville Cliff, Matt Draisma and Ken Pearce.
