Cox Cup kicks off

Garfield Golf Club’s major event, the Cox Cup round two stroke event, kicked off on Saturday.

Rob Tyers and Peter Marquis got off to good starts by both shooting 66 net.

The Cox Cup, formerly known as the Grenville Cup from 1967 to 1974, commenced in 1975 and has run up until the present day.

It was renamed to commemorate the outstanding service given to the Garfield club by husband and wife pair Fred and Maureen Cox.

Fred was club captain from 1962 until 1971, whilst Maureen served as women’s captain within various periods from 1966 until 1982.

Both were individual club champions as well.

Shaun Petherick did best to win the A grade event by scoring 68 playing off a handicap of nine while Tolly Baharis, in pursuit of yet another club title, shot 67 net to claim the B grade event.

With plenty of players within striking range, next week should be an exciting finish.

Brian Tindall signed for a 69, which included a dreaded four putt on the par three 14th hole, no doubt costing him victory in B grade.

Gerry Vandenessen was strong enough to hold up the entire field by shooting 95 net off his handicap of 25.

Peter Marquis in a rich vein of form took the honors on Thursday by shooting 38 points to win the second division, while Charlie Barnes returned to the winners list with a 37-point result playing off 17 to win the first division.

Charlie also had two nearest the pins as well being the ninth and 11th holes.

The women commenced the first of three rounds on Tuesday for the 2015 club championships.

Once again Leesa Matthews getting off to a great start to take an early lead with all women enjoying the rain free day.

The women also combined their monthly medal event on the same day with Dee Pilkington having a great day out by claiming victory as well as win- ning the third round of the silver spoon.

The grand final of the club’s 4BBB par championships was played with all four gentlemen teeing it up at 10.40am.

Daylight broke in freezing cold conditions for the majority of the stroke field.

Trevor Franklin (13) teamed up with his regular four-ball partner Harry Huyskens (20) to play Dave Williams (15) and Peter Scott (25) whom also regularly team up together.

The end result was a comfortable win to Franklin and Huyskens, three up with two to play.
