Frosty start for junior football

By Harrison Johnstone The younger sides felt the cold early in round 10 of Warragul and District junior football, but by the time the other age groups got to their respective fields glorious warmer weather enveloped the games.

Many of the new clubs again stepped up to the challenges of the league and continued to show how well they are developing.

Under 14

Colts ran out winners over Longwarry, 16.15 (111) to 0.1 (1).

The Longwarry side showed great determination and kept the pressure up all game with strong, driving tackles but weren’t able to keep up with the onslaught of the Warragul Colts who played brilliantly.

Bunyip’s running game enabled them to score quickly and run out convincing winners over Yarragon, 19.18 (132) to 3.0 (18).

Warranor got off to a fast start with strong running and good ball use on the way to victory over Caldermeade, 15.19 (109) to 0.0 (0).

Caldermeade played a tight well contested second and were unlucky not to score.

In a solid encounter the Warragul Blues were able to outclass the Neerim South side to take the win, 13.8 (86) to 0.0 (0).

Height and experience seemed to be the key elements that drove the Blues to victory.

Ellinbank opened the scoring but Drouin Jets fought back to take the win 4.10 (34) to 1.5 (11).

Ellinbank’s Jacob Hermansen played his 50th game.

Hallora played the better game on the day to defeat Poowong-Loch 10.10 (70) to 3.3 (21).

Poowong-Loch couldn’t keep up with Hallora’s intensity as the Roos finished with a comfortable lead.

Under 12

Longwarry put up a great fight and played a compelling third quarter but couldn’t defeat the Warragul Colts side, going down 7.4 (46) to 1.3 (9).

Both teams contested well displaying great skills and determination.

Yarragon fought hard against Bunyip in poor visibility conditions but the Bulldogs were too strong.

The game was mostly played in Bunyip’s half as the Bulldogs won 6.7 (43) to 0.0 (0).

Fantastic teamwork allowed Warranor to push through Caldermeade’s strong defence and come away with the win, 8.16 (64) to 1.0 (6).

The Cannons continue to develop their skills together and are getting more talented each week.

The Blues finished as clear winners over Neerim South, 8.13 (61) to 0.0 (0).

The game started in cold crisp conditions with both sides working hard in and around the packs.

Ellinbank came out clear winners over Drouin Jets, 5.6 (36) to 0.0 (0).

Following the first quarter Ellinbank dominated and kept possession well.

Hallora set the pace for PoowongLoch early and continued heavy pressure against the Bulls for the entire match, winning 6.11 (47) to 0.1 (1).

Hallora’s Chris Diston played his 50th game.

Garfield continued to apply pressure resulting in a solid victory over Drouin Cobras, 8.6 (54) to 2.1 (13).

Garfield dominated in the first half showing good skills, while the Cobras fought back in the second, showing good contesting of the ball.

Under 10

Longwarry started well in frosty conditions, keeping the Warragul Colts scoreless for the first half.

Both sides battled it out but it was the skill and determination of the Longwarry side that got them the one point victory, 1.10 (16) to 2.3 (15).

Yarragon fought off a few goals but Bunyip was ferocious, winning 10.7 (67) to 0.0 (0).

Warranor were too strong and ran out winners over Caldermeade, 13.13 (91) to 0.0 (0).

The scoreline reflected the Cannon’s lack of experience but not their determination.

The Blues did well in moving the ball forward and were able to leave winners over Neerim South, 10.7 (67) to 1.0 (6).

The Cats had a real crack and are starting to show confidence in their football.

Drouin Jets picked up their defending as the game went on to run out winners over Ellinbank, 8.3 (51) to 0.0 (0).

Hallora and Poowong-Loch fought out a close game and played hard working towards the ball. The Roos won 0.2 (2) to 0.0 (0). The Drouin Cobras put up a good fight against the Stars but the Garfield side were too strong, winning 5.4 (34) to 1.3 (9).
